Crownsville Hospital

Project: Crownsville Hospital Emergency Service Calls

Project Overview

Stormwater Facilities is the Emergency Services provider for the former Crownsville Hospital property located in Crownsville, Maryland. Crownsville Hospital is a historic property with aging systems which has been vacant since 2004. The property was originally used as a mental hospital and is now a popular filming location for shows, such as the Netflix drama “House of Cards,” and movies, such as the 2006 horror movie “Crazy Eights.” The hospital even starred in its own documentary, Crownsville Hospital: From Lunacy to Legacy.

The care and maintenance of an aging property presents many challenges from the corroded pipes to the care and reverence necessary when working on a historic property. The services provided at the Crownsville Hospital site primarily consist of water main break repairs, however, Stormwater Facilities offers emergency response services for sewage system malfunctions, sinkholes, storm drain blockages, flooding issues, sewage emergencies, and other emergencies as needed.

The most recent Emergency service call to Crownsville Hospital required a 7-foot deep excavation to expose the 6” water main. The source of the leak was pinpointed to a fire hydrant line, which was never in full use as a hydrant. The aging bolts on the hydrant valve had deteriorated, causing the valve to leak. Further excitation was carried out to expose the entire valve and allow for the line to be capped off. Once the source of the leak was fixed, Stormwater crews installed concrete restraint, tested and removed the non-functional fire hydrant, and then performed site cleanup. The removed valve and hydrant were then disposed of onsite.
